This department at a university provides a platform for scholars worldwide to present their studies and facilitate academic discussions. It hosts about 35 public lectures and symposium each year. Lecture topic — focusing on contemporary Asia as well as American related affairs — range from politics, economy, and foreign and military affairs, to cinema and pop culture. In addition, the department invites undergraduate/graduate students from overseas as summer interns/fellows. Interns/fellows work as research associates with faculty members at the university.
Interns are invited to join weekly cross-disciplinary seminar sessions given by the university faculty. Seminars are designed to expand the interns’ knowledge of Japan and its place in the wider East Asia region.
Interns will assist faculty supervisors and conduct academic research commensurate with the faculty member’s research projects and co-written articles (where possible, interns will be paired with faculty whose research interests they share, and which is consistent with the focus of their academic studies).
With faculty approval, interns may also conduct their own research, provided it is consistent with the general theme and focus of the faculty sponsor. Students may develop special projects related to their interest if this does not interfere with other duties, especially if the project is in an area related to Japan (or Japan in comparative reference).
All interns must be computer proficient in Windows and/or Mac platforms. Videography, still/digital photography, webpage construction, and post-production editing of digital media skills are preferred (For media-film internships only) (May be required, depending on the nature of the specific internship).
Looking for someone diligent, self-motivated, independent, team player.
